Housing authority offers help for new homeowners

By Standard-Examiner correspondentTerrie L. Stephenson

PLEASANT VIEW -- Funds are available to help first-time buyers get $5,000 to help purchase a home, Landon Halverson, executive director of the Weber County Housing Authority, told the city council this week.

During his presentation, Halverson said the funding is to help first-time home buyers or those who have not owned a home for three years.

He said the money also could be used to assist displaced homewners, as in the situation of a divorce.

The funding would be $5,000 per homeowner providing they meet the qualifications. There is an income guideline which is based on the size of the family. For instance, a family of six people could earn $64,000 or less to be eligible.

Those who wish to purchase a home with the down-payment assistance also need to provide $2,000 of their own money and to complete a buyer education class to qualify for the funding.

He said the class educates the home buyers on how to select a Realtor and a lender as well as what to look for when purchasing a home.

Halverson said Weber County Housing Authority is eager to help people get into their own home and said they are looking for very interested and dedicated home buyers.

He said this program does include those in Weber County, with the exception of Ogden which has its own housing authority program.

'There is enough funding to help 45 families,' said Halverson. He said currently the Weber County Housing Authority has received only 10 applications.

He said they want to distribute the funds before December of this year so they can apply for more of the same type of CDBG grant money.

Landon said he knows Pleasant View is a desirable community to live in and said there is plenty of funding still available for those interested in owning a home.

'I think there will be a run on your bank here as people become familiar with this program,' said Mayor Doug Clifford.
